These are my rough and ready viewing-notes on DeMille's Cleopatra. Use them to jog your memory and to direct you to scenes in the film (time-counter numbers are included periodically).

· first shot is cleopatra's empty bed, pan right to dead egyptian soldier lying beside sword, black slave bound hand and feet with curtain rope, women attendants enter and scream, "The queen, where is the queen
· bound in chariot racing through desert

· Apollodorus called "mighty schoolmaster" "philosopher"
· tugs at ropes with teeth in impatience
· Is this a time to talk of Romans, I've had no breakfast, I'm hungry.

· in roman bath, rome cannot be turned into another Orient [brutus]

· enobarbus, caesar, marc, marc: women cannot think and cannot fight, they are just playthings for us, most of them, all of them

· i'm frightened of something, (great double close-up, cleo's head tipped back)
· will you wear this dress when you get married too, charmian laughs, i was just thinking of caesar trying to unhook it, all laugh
· ides of march, murder (38 mins.)
· cleo waiting after caesar has been murdered, she shows different ways of displaying train, messenger comes to announce death, the body lies at the foot of pompey's statue, no one will touch it, I will, they come now for Egypt's blood, flee your majesty, think of egypt, think of egypt? but my emperor is dead, close up, caesar is dead, my lover is dead, He didn't love you, you lie! Apollodorus: it wasn't in his arms that he wanted to hold egypt it was in his treasury, it's true you were blind blind (41 mins.)
· argument with romans, octavian describes shakespeare's speech "Friends, Romans, Country..." complaining that Marc took advantage of Caesar's body, Marc plans to trick cleo into a meeting, take egypt by force and send her to rome in chains
· cleo and apollodorus on barge, marc and soldiers waiting for six hours in square, i'll go down to the boat to get her myself, marc does a double take on barge
· Barge Entrance (45 mins.): You're late. Where are my men? they were tired, you mean a little drunk, no, awfully drunk, we'll go now, were you speaking to me; talk? hmph, with all this; then i must confess why i wanted to talk her, i'm dressed to lure you, it was all a plan, don't yo think i know you're my enemy, i suppose it was the most stupid thing i could have done, you know i had show after show to dazzle you, but wel anthony is not a man to be dazzled, what do you care of this for instance?
· woman on ox, women dance in vaguely egyptian way
· i must have failed, pretend you're me and i'm you, puts flower in helmet, and imitates him, tosses flowers, petals fall in
· i hope that you know that I know that you want me to do this.
· dear antony, I think you know that I know you know.
· we're not dining here after all, little reed birds, not much to them, no clams from the sea, women in net offer shells full of pearls, jewels you are a good fisherman, scatter jewels
· leopard tamer, antony loves it, dogs run of, roman dogs, egyptian cats, fire rings
· dissolve to low angle of ship mast, with moon and stars, soft music, charmian singing, dissolve to her strumming harp, dissolve to marc and cleo with water reflection on their faces
· cleo: romans and egypt should meet in public square to plan union not conquest
· cleo: women should be but toys to the great it becomes them both, dissolve to spinning woman, dissolve to cleo drinking and hiccup, queens only talk of stars, queens do not hiccup, under couch, but doesn't it seem a little absurd, i'll stop them for you, smacks her on back, she grabs a big club, do you ever have hiccups? not tonight, what if you hit me like this? it would knock your head off
· she wins him (60 mins.) nods up to Apollodorus, suddenly showing that they have not been alone all this while, spectacular closing of barge scene panning out, petals falling, censers, women crossing veils, slaves begin to row and drummer strikes drum
· in Rome, Octavian before romans inciting them against antony
· who is this poisonous snake who ruins our men?, the egyptian snake will be destroyed, [breaks spear]
· dissolve to quiet scene cleo on bed, harpist playing, marc kissing her arm,
· Marc: Aren't you afraid I might tire of you? No. ...because you are another woman, always new, completely new; messenger announces King of Judea, marc says kiss me first, cleo says be a good boy, run along now
· king of judea strokes her arm with a finger, suggests that octavian would be a friend of egypt if antony were killed
· judea and antony drinking, hand on antony's knee, laugh over octavian saying that cleo should poison antony, antony tells cleo with leopard on leash and laughs wildly, apollodorus says you must poison him for egypt, voice-over of leopard's deep growl, you don't love him; prisoner brought in and allowed [1:12] to drink poison; antony told that the queen is testing poisons
· queen pours new wine, antony upset, i want to see you drink, i always try to do what pleases you, she puts flower in his wine, as he is about to drink, a carrier pigeon arrives tht rome declares war
· Antony springs up and smacks egyptian servant, orders everyone, we need roman soldiers now, cleo is very very impressed
· Antony starts to drink, cleo grabs him: I've seen a god come to life. I'm no longer a queen; I'm a woman.
· Enobarbus tells that there are no generals left but that Rome will welcome him if he kills cleo; enorbarbus reminds him that he once told caesar that women could not think or fight but only playthings; you might have been the world's greatest man but you gave it all away for a woman; cleo is won over, all rome wants is for us to part
· spears in gorge, montage of horns blowing and soldiers in field, big battle [1:27] double exposure of cleo over battle, antony throwing rock
· antony standing at top of gate, i'll come down and fight you alone, octavian says i can think of easier ways to die
· cleo surrenders and the roman soldiers mock him
· wipe pan, antony with dogs, asks for wine
· Antony the plaything of a woman! stabs himself
· cleo gives emblems of kingdom, just spare his life
· cleo discovers antony dying; go back to octavian he's the caesar now
· I am dying Egypt dying. dies, soldiers battering gate; prepare me, the queen of egypt goes to meet her conquerer
· I'm not going to Rome. Now give me the basket. It holds victory.
· Look well for love, look well. And not finding it, give nothing. But if blessed with cleopatra's fortune, give all.
